Note: Samuel Chapman. Death notice in National Banner & Nashville Whig, Saturday, September 23, 1826. Death of Samuel Chapman, "an officer of the Revolution, died on Thursday last" which would have been September 21, 1826. This notice also reported "interred this morning with Masonic honors."
The History of Free Masonry in Tennessee stated that Samuel Chapman, a member of the Cumberland Lodge had died on September 22, 1826.
Smith (1908) and Garrett (1971) had recorded his death date as September 25, 1826. Both were in error on the death day.
In 2014, a re-visit to Samuel Chapman's box tomb confirmed that the day of his death had worn away and cannot be read.

"Samuel Chapman was a member of St. John's Lodge 3, at Newbern, North Carolina, being listed in their returns for 1797-1798-1799. He was a well known stone-mason in Nashville in 1802, affiliated with Cumberland Lodge, 8 January 1819 and received the Degrees in Cumberland Chapter 1 February 1821, was Steward of that Chapter in 1822, and Grand Tyler of the Grand Lodge from 1820 to 1824. He died September 22, 1826."
