During the 2005 Tombstone Survey project, the inscription on this box tomb slab had worn away and could not be read.  In 2008,  John Norvell, descendant of Lipscomb Norvell contacted the Nashville City Cemetery Association.  Mr. Norvell has provided the documentation, photographs and the exact wording of the inscription which he had recorded  during a visit in 1970.

In the spring of 2010, the slab of the box tomb will be re-inscribed with the following:
In Memory of
Lipscomb Norvell,
A Christian Patriot.
He served in the
Revolutionary War
From 1776 to 1783 and
Died the 2nd of March 1843.

Note: 1908 Inscriptions listed incorrectly the death year as 1813 and Garrett 1971 listed 1813 or 1843.  The actual death year was 1843.
