Exciting news! What a week! We’ve made tremendous progress toward establishing a memorial for the thousands of enslaved people buried in the cemetery. Not only have we selected the general location for this meaningful tribute and finalized the inscription, but—BIGGEST NEWS of all—we’ve officially placed the order with Shultz Monuments for a beautiful polished granite memorial bench that will anchor the site.

Thanks to everyone who donated!!! You made this happen!

The memorial will be placed somewhere within the scene pictured in the photo. It’s the most fitting location. While enslaved burials are found in plots throughout the cemetery, this area—designated in historic deeds and interment records as “the Negro Section”—contains more of their resting places than any other one spot in the cemetery.

With the bench now ordered and fully funded, our mission continues: we’re raising funds to create a memorial garden and install an interpretive sign to bring more meaning to the site.
