Documentation 1908 Plat: Capt. A. Kingsley Section 28 SE Lot 31 1909 List: Lot owner A. Kingsley Interment Book: 9-28-1846 Capt. A. Kingsley Superintendent of Nashville Cemetery Note: Nashville Whig, Sept. 29, 1846 “Captain Alpha Kingsley died yesterday morning in Nashville.” Recorded 2006 Captain Alpha Kingsley History I viewed the website directory and index for those names listed as buried at the Nashville City Cemetery. I managed to find my ancestor, Captain A. (Alpha) Kingsley along with his son William Bissell Kingsley and Alpha’s adopted daughter Eugenia Wilson. They are interred at lot 28.51 as shown in your records. Alpha Kingsley was my fifth Great Uncle. I am directly descended from his brother Simeon Burk Kingsley. Alpha was born in Woodstock VT, in 1778. He joined the Army in 1799 and was in charge of the building of the first fort at Fort Madison Iowa in 1808/1809. Shortly thereafter he wed Elizabeth Ayer of Kingston in Roane County, TN. He probably was stationed at Fort Southwest Point where William Bissel Kingsley was probably born. About 1811 after his father-in-law died, he moved his family to Nashville and owned a mercantile business there from 1815 to about 1819. Thereafter, about 1820/21 he owned the Nashville Inn and operated it for about four years. He was the first Sexton of the City Cemetery. He remained in Nashville until he died in September of 1846. He was also the district paymaster for that part of Tennessee.
