Garrett Index

Garrett Edited 2010

At the Nashville City Cemetery, major mapping of Sections and Lots and recording of tombstone inscriptions took place in 1908. In charge of these efforts was Felix Randolph Robertson Smith, an engineer, engaged by the Nashville Board of Parks. Mr. Smith’s plat maps and inscriptions are on the Nashville City Cemetery Association (NCCA) web site. The next effort to record tombstone inscriptions was undertaken by Jill K. Garrett and Iris H. McClain.

Garrett and McClain’s endeavors began in 1954 and ended in 1970. In 1971, their findings were typed up and typescripts were placed in a few libraries. The listing was not published. No project to record the tombstone inscriptions was attempted again until 2005, when the Nashville City Cemetery Association enlisted volunteers and recorded every readable tombstone in the City Cemetery. In 2008 and 2009, the Restoration of the City Cemetery was coordinated by the Metro Historical Commission and now some inscriptions, unreadable in 2005, can be deciphered and recorded.

The importance of the Garrett 1971 Inscriptions can not be overstated. No inscription listings were prepared for 63 years after 1908, until Garrett and McClain typed up their work. The original Garrett typescript included additional information about obituaries and burial data. In 2007, a new transcription for the City Cemetery Interment Books (1846-1979) was posted on the Nashville Public Library web site.. Obituaries are also now available on the NCCA web site.

Additional Obituaries from Newspapers were included in Garrett 1971 Tombstone Inscriptions typescript. Jill Garrett’s research located these obituaries for people buried in City Cemetery. Some of these people did not have tombstones in 1971. Those with tombstone inscriptions in 1908 have been identified in this list. Those with tombstones in the 2005 Survey have been linked to their respective pages.

In 2010, it became apparent that an edited edition of Garrett 1971 should be developed; could be added to the City Cemetery web site; and would be a welcome addition to the research tools on the site. The edited text includes only the tombstone inscriptions. The obituary information has been excerpted, edited, and can be accessed with the above link.

Some Important Matters to note:

  • Smith 1908, Garrett 1971 and NCCA 2005. Inscriptions recorded do not always agree. Recording inscriptions from old tombstones is very difficult. Remember some of the tombstones at City Cemetery date to the early 19th century.
  • Garrett listed the date of birth or death: 25 June 1850.
  • Garrett listed the years of a person’s life: 43-9-15, which meant 43 years 9 months & 15 days at the time of death. In Garrett Edited 2010, take note: Death years which occurred before January 1846 have been marked in Bold. Interment Books for the Nashville City Cemetery begin in 1846, so the reader is advised that a person with a death date prior to January 1846 will not appear in the Interment Book entries

In Garrett Edited 2010, take note:

  • If there is a date and question mark 1873 (?), then the reader is advised that Garrett & McClain had a question about the exact date.
  • Some graves and tombstones were removed from family graveyards and relocated to City Cemetery. Re-interments were not listed in the Interment Books of City Cemetery. When known, the date of relocation has been listed.

Garrett Edited 2010 has been a joint project of the Nashville City Cemetery Association and Metro Government Archives.
