Historical Information John Brown Mahan was one of three infants born to James Mahan, f.m.c. and his wife who were buried at City Cemetery between 1856 – 1865, as reported in the City Cemetery Interment Books. An infant, black, buried on August 26, 1863, was identified as a child of James Mahan, free man of color. This infant would be John Brown Mahan, whose tombstone listed him as the son of James and Casandra Mahan, who died on August 25, 1863, at age 2 years 7 months and 17 days. U.S. Census 1860 for Nashville Ward 4, Davidson County, listed James Mahan 28 years, his wife Cassandre [sic] 19 years and child Mary J. Mahan 1 year old. James Mahan was listed as a Barber. In U.S. Census 1870, James Mahan is listed as a Barber with a daughter Mary aged 16 years “at school.”
