Treats and Tombstones October 17th!

An October morning made for kids at the Nashville City Cemetery!
History meets Halloween on this special, spooky Saturday morning at the Nashville City Cemetery! Join us for Treats & Tombstones on October 17!
Little ghosts, ghouls, and goblins can join a kid-friendly guided tour of Nashville’s oldest cemetery at 10:00 AM. Be sure to stick around afterward for a small but sweet Trunk or Treat!
Costumes are optional but encouraged. Free parking is available in the Cemetery. This is a free event, but registration helps guarantee adequate staffing and supplies.
This event is brought to you by the all-volunteer Nashville City Cemetery Association and its mission to beautify and preserve the site. Donations appreciated to support our educational outreach and programming.
The Nashville City Cemetery is a Metro Nashville Public Park managed in part by the Metro Nashville Historical Commission. It is handicap accessible, opens at dawn and closes at dusk, and welcomes furry friends on leashes at all times.
Exciting news! What a week! We’ve made tremendous progress establishing a memorial for the thousands of enslaved people buried in the cemetery.

Exciting news! What a week! We’ve made tremendous progress toward establishing a memorial for the thousands of enslaved people buried in the cemetery. Not only have we selected the general location for this meaningful tribute and finalized the inscription, but—BIGGEST NEWS of all—we’ve officially placed the order with Shultz Monuments for a beautiful polished granite memorial bench that will anchor the site.
Thanks to everyone who donated!!! You made this happen!
The memorial will be placed somewhere within the scene pictured in the photo. It’s the most fitting location. While enslaved burials are found in plots throughout the cemetery, this area—designated in historic deeds and interment records as “the Negro Section”—contains more of their resting places than any other one spot in the cemetery.
With the bench now ordered and fully funded, our mission continues: we’re raising funds to create a memorial garden and install an interpretive sign to bring more meaning to the site.
