“The Personal Encounter between General Forrest and Lieutenant Gould,” by Frank Smith, Secretary of Maury County Historical Society.
As a boy, he had witnessed the conflict, during the Civil War, in Columbia, Tennessee, which resulted in A.W. Gould’s stab wound on June 13th and death on June 26, 1863. In this article, Mr. Smith wrote as follows: “In the Maury County Historical Society is the account book of Lamb & Barr, Undertakers, which shows cash received for Lieutenant Gould’s coffin $128. The remains were removed to Nashville and are buried in the family lot in the old City Cemetery. A plain headstone has the simple lettering:

A. W. Gould
Born
July 12, 1840
Died
June 26, 1863″

Frank Smith’s History of Maury County, TN. Research notes compiled and published by the Maury County Historical Society, 1969. Page 245. “Gould buried at Rose Hill (cemetery in Columbia) and afterwards removed to Nashville.”

Note:When Lt. Gould died in Columbia, Tennessee on June 26, 1863, it was during the Civil War. Nashville was occupied by the Federal Army. No transportation to Nashville for the purpose of burial of a Confederate soldier would have been possible at that time. Reburial of the remains of Lt. Gould took place, as shown in the Interment Book, in the Nashville City Cemetery on February 9, 1866. His father James Gould, who was living at the time of reburial, would have ordered the tombstone and its inscription. Less than six months later, James Gould was buried in the Gould family lot on August 2, 1866.
