History
       Joseph Woods McEwen, son of Sophia Coleman and Joseph Harvey McEwen, graduated from the University of Nashville Medical College on February 25, 1858. He was married to Julia Story of Shelbyville. Dr. McEwen served as an Alderman for the City of South Nashville from 1852-1854.

At the beginning of the Civil War he served as Acting Assistant Surgeon at the Anderson Hospital, Nashville. On April 17, 1862, he was appointed Assistant Surgeon for the CSA. He died of typhoid fever in Nashville on October 18, 1863 and was buried at City Cemetery.

Anderson Hospital, serving Confederate soldiers, was located in Nashville from November 1861 until the occupation of Nashville in February 1862.
